Meet Angelina Assanti
#1 Best Selling, Multiple Award-Winning Comedy Writer
Hi! I'm from a small town in Western Massachusetts. This means I speak properly and don't have an accent. That doesn't stop people from always saying "Park the car!" in a poorly executed Boston accent when they find out where I'm from. I originally moved to Florida to go to college. I went to a small school in Orlando and lived there for years. After college, I moved to Fort Myers and I have been here ever since.
I always liked entertaining people. I had a radio show for a couple of years but I decided that wasn't for me. Then, everyone thought I was going to be a stand-up comedian. I tried it for a little while. But I have a propensity for getting into trouble and I'm sure you know, comedians tend to find trouble easily. And I didn't need accessories in that department.
I never thought writing would be a viable career but it turns out after winning several awards, I discovered I'm pretty good at it. Lucky for me, there aren't a lot of female comedy writers where I live (I haven't actually met another woman writing it yet). When I meet people and they find out I'm an author, they ask me if I write children's books. I must look really sweet. Because when I tell them I write comedy, they are shocked. I guess I don't look the part!
I like to write fiction because I like to write about bad things happening to my characters and then figuring out how to get them out of their predicament. Last year, I found myself in my own predicament when I was diagnosed with cancer. That's not something I liked telling people when they'd ask how I spent my summer vacation. However, it made for a funny non-fiction book which has garnered awards, critical acclaim, and is a #1 bestseller on Amazon. That book is, "Thank God I Got Cancer...I'm Not a Hypochondriac Anymore!" And, it's true. It did cure my hypochondria.
Now that I am in remission, when I'm not writing, I am making audiences laugh by speaking about my cancer experience.
You wouldn't believe the letters I get from people thanking me for writing something they can identify and laugh with. Cancer sucks but I know I got it so I could help other people laugh their way through it.
